He can talk to Angela Merkel ANY time...
Word on the streets is that said streets would be crazy today too, with road closures and bus disruptions, and as we walk to check Checkpoint Charlie, all is confirmed. Politzei with dogs patrol the streets, police vans with blue lights flashing are lined up one after the other and we are turned away one block from our destination.
The weather is oppressive with a maximum of 34°C predicted - unprecedented for Berlin.
We head for the Fernsehturm TV tower, a modern towering beacon in the centre of town
The afternoon objective is the Brandenberg Gate but guess who wrecks that plan too? Major subway stations are either closed completely or largely shut down and crawling with police. We get as far as Potsdamer Platz and it's shopping arcade. We lap up the cooler surroundings with a variety of everyday shops and cafes. Ready-made fresh fruit juices are a winner all round!
Dinner is also a winner. We join Walter's friends... Christian, Jules and their children. Between them, they have two lifetimes of stories from living and working in various countries and make delightful dinner companions at a small German restaurant near their home.
It is the highlight of Berlin so far!
