Past trips seem to have developed a photographic theme - spires, gargoyles - based on personal fancy. I recently read that finding such a theme and forcing yourself to include it in your travel photos is a good artistic exercise. But what to choose this time?

Google the topic and you can (of course) find lists of suggestions. The one that immediately jumps out for a trip such as this is BRIDGES! I imagine so many possibilities from the inevitable bridges spanning broad rivers to smaller canal footbridges and impressive highway viaducts alongside train or river routes. I check to see whether there are any Calatravo bridges along the way, having see one of his futuristic works in Seville last year.

Sadly - no...

Along with this aqueous theme, it's also time to explore the colour picker feature on my camera. So a second project will be finding intriguing things or beautiful scenes highlighting BLUE - which also suggests the theme for titles.

l wake at an almost not-too-early hour to find blue sky!
Forecast 6-16C, no rain! Today is clearly to be the walking day for Amsterdam.

Gayle has arrived safely after her flight and has found our hotel. Three of us enjoy breakfast and/or coffee before heading out into the straachst and grachts (streets and canals) around our Jordaan district. The architecture is beautiful, the bikes are everywhere and in all shapes and colours, the canal boats vary from water-logged dinghies through barges to residential houseboats and tour boats. The hop-on-hop-off transport here is a large orange barge.

Hilary and I book the last two spots for today for the climb to the top of Westerkerk Cathedral - the Protestant church with the tallest spire in the city. It gives a great view of our neighbourhood!

On the slow walk back home, we hit the evening peak hour - bikes everywhere. All sorts of cyclsts. At speed! And people taking in the sun from their front steps, open windows, canal edges or cafes.

Dinner tonight sees the seven of us reunited in a pancake bakery for dinner. Most of us opt for the various omelettes for mains, having spied the blueberry and Belgian chocolate pancakes on the special menu for dessert.

Evening starts to fall around 10-10.30pm as the streets and bridges light up.
