CX289 pulls into Frankfurt at some ungodly hour starting with a 6. It is an enormous airport with two large terminals connected by endless escalators, passageways and a skytrain. The signage is good for all things - except the O2 shop. I do numerous circuits on the advice of different staff until one sets me straight, only to find out that it doesn't open until 11am on Sundays!

An internet SIM will have to wait...

The ultra-modern Frankfurt Flughafen Bahnhof (airport station) is spread over two levels for regional and ICE trains. Open at each end to the weather, it is decidedly icy. I retreat upstairs to sit out the next two hours before boarding a sleek DB train to Amsterdam.

ICE126 skims along at a consistent 270km/h. I tuck into my proscuitto salad roll thinking happy train thoughts of France and Spain last year and eager to return to freshly squeezed orange juice as the norm for a few weeks!

We stop at Cologne, passing over a wide river which we will soon explore more closely! The footbridge alongside is covered with lovers' padlocks like the Paris Pont des Artes and the impressive Cologne Cathedral sits alongside the station.
Further stops include Düsseldorf, Arnhem and Uttrech before arriving at Amsterdam Centraal Station, a grand polychrome brick building surrounded by canals and bikes.

Yes, we are in Holland!
