It's another blue sky day - we have been lucky with the weather overall, given there were floods in the Midlands a week or so ago.

From the other side of the world, Ian had located a fun run and this morning is the day. He is gone by 9am, although he doesn't have far to travel. Our flat is smack bang in the middle of the course. We toddle up through our back lane to see him sprint past up the Royal Mile then wander down and try and find him anongst the 8000 other runners.

Futile, of course.

He eventually returns home with his spoils for completing the 5km course, showers and immediately heads off to catch a train to Glasgow to meet up with an old friend.

We remaining three head up the Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle. With the road still closed from the fun run, there's no chance of catching a taxi, so it's a long slow walk.

We spend the afternoon exploring the Scottish seat of power... Victorian buildings perched on 12th and 15th century towers on volcanic bedrock. The 360° views over Edinburgh are spectacular. The Scottish crown jewels are there along with multiple canons. We see the rooms where Mary Queen of Scots lived and watch volunteers portraying Scottish military from the 1600's. They perform a march-out at 4pm along the similarly dated 1600's cobbled road.

From there, it is all downhill... One Royal Mile home.
