Today is a 3 or 4 hour drive north to Edinburgh, depending on whether you take the scenic route through the forests and Carlisle or head straight up the M1. Our host convinces us of the latter.
Running the width of the UK around this region is Hadrian's Wall - another 2000 year old relic totally unguarded and accessible to the public. Indeed, there is a walking track across the country following it and it's remnant towers.
We divert off the M1 to visit it... Heddon-on-the-Wall rates highly in proximity, Google recommendations and a promising name.
We cannot find it.
None of the brown tourist road signs help, once directing us off the main drag. We sit in a hotel carpark and scan the fields... We continue onto Corbridge. Fine lunch fare and coffee at the artisan bakery but no wall.
We give Hexham to the west the final chance and spot a 10m length in a paddock as we fly past at 70mph. Dejected with our efforts, we head back to the A69 and north to Edinburgh.
There is the obligatory stop at the border for a and we finally settle into our apartment - another accommodation option this time. We have decided to spread out in somewhere with a washing machine! Without actually knowing it's address in advance, we land a great spot in the city centre, one block from the Royal Mile, a view of Arthur's Seat and round the corner from cafes and a Tesco supermarket. Microwave pastas and curries are on special so dinner is settled as a quiet night in!
