Barcelona to Nice would have involved three trains - an all day exercise fraught with the dangers of making connections and hauling luggage.

We opt for a one hour flight.

Vueling Airlines seems to be the Spanish equivalent of Jetstar. Packed in like sardines, pay-as-you-go food but gets you from A to B.

Barcelona Airport is modern and expansive. We grab a quick breakfast and delight in the self-service orange juicer machine. Push the lever like a Coke machine at Maccas and the oranges spiral down, rotate and squeeze the real thing into your cup!

One hour after takeoff, we descend over the azure sea of the French Riviera into Nice and rationalise hailing a taxi after catching so many buses and trains thus far.

Hotel Victor Hugo is another small establishment of a few rooms within a larger building, this one occupied by many medical specialists. The 'hotel' itself is somewhat dated, but large enough - especially since we'll be out most of the time.

This afternoon, we walk along the promenade studying the beach of boulders and into the old town. We make it to the lookout and around the harbour where there are some mightily impressive 'yachts' moored.

After a quick dinner and slow amble back along the main mall, it's time for an early night... Liz has a day trip planned for tomorrow with a train we can't miss.

It is, in fact, the sole reason for coming to Nice!

Lemme guess, Entrevaux? Sounds like a 'Nice' stay so far....
