Well after the bus ride from hell we were more than ecstatic to arrive in a very wet BA. After waiting for 30 minutes while passengers argued with the bus company we received our $17 pesos ($34) AU refund¨:0) yay.
We attempted to bock in a couple of the hostels that had been recommended but there were full until the following night. We ended up in a nice hostel for the night but it only had 1 toiled for men and 1 for woman. Not really that great considering the place sleeps up to 80 people.
Being our 1st night in BA & Argentina being steak country we decided it was best to head out and find a decent steak. We found a nice little place that did steaks but they weren't the big inch thick slabs we were dreaming of. My steak was by far one of the best pieces of cow I have ever eaten.
It was soon made clear to us that we had arrived on St Patricks day as every pub was having some sort of fiesta. We jumped in a cab to head into town but the cabbie had a better plan. There was a street party going on with 2 streets closed off to party in. The night was a fantastic introduction to BA. We partied on the streets for a while meeting so many nice Argentinians.
Later on in the night we met up some girls who said they were going to a club close by. We tailed along to find a really nice club with a hefty cover charge of $30 pesos. Luckily the girls knew the bouncers so we got in for free. If we thought the cover charge was pricey we were in for a shock. A simple bourbon and coke was $20 pesos about $10 AU (I thought argie was cheap?). Either way it was a top look into what was to come in BA.
The next day we moved into The Clan hostel which was recommended to us by Simon. The place and the people were cool but unfortunately because we got there after 12 our booking had been cancelled. This meant Nick and I would be getting very close over the next week in La Suite with a double bed.
We spent the next 2 weeks at The Clan getting very messing at night and exploring the city in the dying hours of the afternoon due to our sleeping patters. Clubs in BA dont open till about 2am in the morning so you dont get home until well after 8am. We did somehow manage to fit in some of the touristy things in BA.
We visited La Bocca which is where all the colourful painted houses are. The place was very influenced by the Itailians leading to some very cool old streets with tango dancing everywhere you go.
Mum will be happy to know that we also made it to school on one of the days. We got a little bit lost looking for a museum and ended up in a university. It was the start of the semester so everyone was singing up for classes etc so we joined the frenzy. We wandered around the campus checking out classes and the facilities.
We finally found the museum a few days later which was nice too.
On our second last day we went to check out the Japanese gardens which were a bit disappointing. They appeared to be undergoing a make over so were a little all over the place.
For our last meal in BA we were determined to get a decent sized chunk of cow. So we got a recommendation from the hostel and headed of in search. We were not disappointed in the slightest. We all ordered large steaks were were just superb. Definitely up there as the best Ive had. We also met a nice old Argentinian couple who were seated next to us. They shared their meal with us which was nice of them. Pitty it was intestines mmm yummy thanks.
Oh yeah we managed to make a Jamiroquai concert too but it was a bit of a fizzer. They sold no beer as it was an under ages event so we wont talk about it.
I could literally go on for hours with stories from nights in the hostel and the massive nightclubs but I wont bore you all.
Overall Buenos Aires is probably the best major city I have visited. The city itself is beautiful and is scattered with large parks and monuments every few blocks. If all feels very European. The atmosphere is very safe and friendly and we didnt experience any problems besides being dragged from a taxi by 5 policemen at 8 in the morning but lets not go into that ;0) For all you single guys and girls grab a passport and spend a few months in BA. The people are stunning and have such a positive attitude. If the city had surf or snow I could live there forever. But for now its time to visit Chile.
