After a good night's rest we had a hearty meal courtesy of Joel at a great breakfast joint in Little Rock. We were stuffed and regretted not being able to take a nap and hang with Joel a little longer, but the road called and we were so close to arriving home. After our goodbyes we pointed the car east again and geared up for the final drive which would be our longest of the trip.

Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia rolled under our wheels as we sped towards Columbia. It was about two in the morning when we crossed the border into South Carolina and a wave of excitement and relief washed over us as we knew we were only an hour away from the front door. We gave as much of a cheer as we could given our exhaustion and an eager grin stayed on our faces as we peeled off the final miles of our journey.

We pulled in to the driveway and the I jangled the keys to the house for the first time in two weeks. Our first priority was visiting the cats and making sure they had not forgotten us. They hadn't. . . We unpacked the car and settled in as much as we could given the late hour and our weariness. I cooked a quick dinner (or was it breakfast) and gave a relieved sigh when I took a swig of the beer I had opened. Our souls had been worn thin and the emotion at that moment was a dull and tired joy for the home we were at and a sense of accomplishment for the journey we had taken. It will take a while to absorb the ways in which we were impacted by the trip, but at that point everything we had done was life-affirming to the simple act of being at home. . .

I turned on the TV to catch a little bit of a movie and wind down, but only a few minutes had passed with only a few sips of beer taken from the bottle before my eyes closed heavily and I sank into a deep comforting sleep. Home. . . That is also why we leave. . .
