Day 1 Xian
Entry 8 of 23 | show all | print this entry |
Scott picked us up a the hotel, after we had another very good breakfast, we headed to the airport. Scott took us all the way to the China Air check in area and to the security area. We gave him an envelope with some Yuan (China money) and an Oregon lapel flag pin. The flight to Xian was uneventful. Although Xian has 6 million people, but the airport was much much smaller than Beijing and as we collected our bags, we could see our new guide waiting for us, holding up a card with our name. We were so much more relaxed with the system now on our second go-around. This guide is a young lady, Caroline, 25 years old and she is way more enthusiastic than our Beijing guide and filled with historical and current information she wants to share about Xian. Her chinese name is pronounced Eye-Chen so we are going to try to use her real name instead of these fake guide names. Our hotel is very, very nice, almost opulent. Grand Mecure Xian. We are on our own for the rest of the day, so we went for a walk around the city. As we said before, Beijing and now Xian are so "gray" and we've decided it is just plain dirt. Things are not kept clean. And the smells are way different than home. For dinner, we stopped at a little restaurant. There were about 5 young girls there and none could speak english. Their menu didn't have any pictures like most do. We were a little lost, but managed to order fried rice which was quite good. Mostly white rice with spicy peppers in it. Total cost $1.45 for two bowls of fried rice and tea.
Prices in the hotels are not cheap, but if you go out in the little shops, they are a lot cheaper. Not as cheap as Indonesia by any means.
Tomorrow we have a full day starting at 8:30 and she said we won't get back to our room until 9:30 pm.

WOW, is all I can think of to say right now. What a trip! I really look forward to your daily postings and I read them to Kevin too. I think I'll share them with Jody. I know she'll get a kick out of them. She's way more adventurous than her parents. :)

Gray (reply) Mar 16, 2008 20:23 EST by lee_smith
Is it so gray because they don't keep it clean or that there are sooo many people and the can't keep it clean? Interesting the priorities--perhaps China is still 'very poor' at the local level. I am happy to hear you are eating at the local restaurants instead of high-end touristy places. Much more tasty, fun and adventurous. Fried rice?...did you try doing a pantomime of a chicken??... clawing, ... show all

Fried rice? (reply) Mar 16, 2008 13:40 EST by buckbacaw
Only fried rice? Whoa! You have had duck beaks, fried insects and chicken feet (hmm, just like at McDonalds back home), don't lose your sense of adventure. Whatever doesn't kill you should make you stronger.
Jack, bring back some bread recipes.
