Raining and over cast in White Plains we took a day trip up to Connecticut through the following towns... Stamford, Norwalk, Bridgeport, Stratford, New Haven to New London. New London is historical with colonial style houses and buildings mixed with new.
In the next town Groton we went to take a tour around the Submarine Force Library & Museum to see displays and collections of America's submarine heritage. We toured the NAUTILUS, that made Naval history: the world's first nuclear powered vessel, first ship to go to the North Pole and first to journey "20,000 Leagues under the sea." It's amazing to see the spaces where the crew worked, ate, slept, and entertained themselves on their long voyages far beneath the ocean's waves.
Before we stopped for a late / early dinner in Mystic, we stopped at the Olde Mystic Village. It is an early American village with over 30 shops that sell all types of goodies. We ate at the S & P Oyster Co over looking the Mystic River. We were both so hungry that we indulged in a three course meal. For starters we had mussels in a leek & garlic sauce and crumbed calamari fried with olives, peppers, sun dried tomato & artichoke. Mains were sole wrapped in a seafood mix and to top it off we had crème brulee and S & P homemade bread pudding drizzled with amaretto and cinnamon. We definitely had a feast !
Tummies full we thought we would try our luck at the Foxwoods River Casino before heading off home. Our GPS decided to take us the scenic route down Lantern Hill Road which was lovely. Apparently gambling is illegal here but tolerated. The Foxwoods River Casino is pretty much the same as Monte Casino. From there we cruised home. What an enjoyable day it was.
