We took the ferry from Singapore to Batam Island, Indonesia. From our hotel, we could still see Singapore...and Marina Bay Sands...but had to switch our clocks back an hour...it's like we could look across the time change..lol. We asked about 4 locals for information on what there is to do on Batam Island...since we were staying there for two nights before heading to Sugi. All of them gave us blank looks and said we could go to a shopping mall...haha. So we did! We took a taxi to the Nagoya Shopping Mall, because they all said it was definitely too far to walk....although we ended up walking the 10 minutes back to the hotel later...lol. Something with Asia...if it's more than 5 minutes away...it's too far to walk! We didn't want to shop, but thought we'd walk around the area and see what we could see....not too much! So we went for some local lunch....and decided to find a Post Office, buy some postcards and send them home
. We found the post office.....a counter with a person behind it....no signs, no advertisements....just a bare counter! So out of luck for the postcards! haha. Since the taxi ride to the mall didn't seem so far, we decided to try to walk back...not having a clue where to go. About 2 minutes into walking, we were swarmed by children...I couldn't understand what they were saying, but I was sure they were going to try to rob us...there were 6 or 7 of them, all around 8 to 10 years old....impossible to watch all of them at once! Turned out, they just wanted some money. We kept walking, turned a corner, and there were more!...another swarm of children...saying the only English they know...My name is Ben....or at least that's what I thought he was trying to say. We kept walking, I'm sure they yelled some "not very nice things" to us...and that's when we decided to stop at the convenience store and buy some snacks and juices for the next bunch. We thought for sure that we would run into some more children before we reached the hotel...and this time, we were determined to have something to give them! So we loaded up on peanuts, crackers, and juices.....and there were no more children...lol. Figures. We made it back to the hotel without finding any postcards, and now with two bags of snacks...lol. Across the street from the hotel was a nice looking steakhouse...Teras Steakhouse. The atmosphere was great...sitting outside, enjoying the weather...the food was fantastic, and it was reasonably priced! Only 25,000 rupiahs for a meal
In the morning, we headed out to Sekupang to catch the Ferry to Sugi Island (1.5 hours by ferry). Chaos!! The local ferry was packed...people pushing to get on...I don't know how the children don't get pushed overboard! We finally made it on, found a seat, and enjoyed the bumpy ride to Moro. The ride was beautiful, passing by all the islands, most of them still undeveloped. There were numerous floating villages along the way and a few fishermen too. When we got to Moro, we switched to the resort's boat....another 15 minute ride to the resort....WOW!!! It was amazing. There was nothing around...and then all we could see was the resort...a few little bungalows in the water, between two islands....what an amazing place! Telunas Beach Resort...Heaven on Earth!
All of the buildings are Indonesian style, grass roof, rustic wood structures...but the inside was amazingly comfortable and well furnished. We were welcomed with a welcome drink and friendly staff. They had lunch ready for us when we arrived. We stayed for two nights. There was only us and another young couple from Ukraine. We had the whole resort. There is so much to do there....but so easy to relax! It was rainy for most of our time there, so we caught up on our journals and got to know our new friends from the Ukraine
. It was interesting to share our culture and to learn about theirs...we've never met anyone from that part of the world, so we definitely didn't run out of things to talk about. They were traveling with their 3.5 month old baby....so brave! The food at Telunas was to die for...It was all inclusive, so they provide you with three meals a day....three scrumptiously delicious meals a day!! If you are in the area, you should definitely check out the resort...I'd love to meet some friends or family there one day...hint hint...anyone up for it?? Two nights was not enough!! It's all an open concept, but there are no bugs...only a couple ants...not many mosquitoes ( I didn't notice any, Jay got a couple bites)...and geckos. One of which became my favorite!!...we were sitting down for dinner....It was raining...Jay felt a "plop" on his head...hehe...a raindrop fell through the roof....wait...No it didn't!! A lizard pooped on his head!! hahahahaha...he went to wipe the "raindrop" off, and off came the lizard poop! It was hilarious...a one off situation...never happens to people...except for Jay! I couldn't stop laughing...and that lizard became my friend...lol. Our last night was interesting...there was a HUGE storm that moved in....the winds were crazy and the rain was strong. Our hut was very strong, so it didn't sway too much...Jay and I enjoyed it...our friends were terrified though..lol. I guess the typhoons in Taiwan prepared us for it...lol.
In the morning, we headed back to Moro...we had some time, so Jay and I went off to explore the town a bit...so interesting. And the people are so friendly. We love Indonesia...well, that part of it...haven't made it anywhere else yet. We caught the local ferry back to Sekupang, and then the ferry to Singapore. I wish we were staying longer in Telunas!
We spent one night in Singapore...packed our stuff...said goodbye to my relatives...and we're off to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!
And it began!...our journey to find Heaven on Earth....
