Today we changed hotels for a different scene and to be closer to the Zocalo square. We had got used to our hotel and came to really like it but we thought a change would be good so we headed to a place called hotel Amigo Zocalo, only a few hundred meters from the famous Zocalo square. We slept late, had our usual breakfast, packed our stuff and waited until the maximum check out time of 2pm. Then headed down and called had a taxi called. On the way to the new hotel we drove through what seemed to be like Salamanca market times 1000, it went on through about 6 blocks, there were people everywhere and it was complete kaos. We didn't drive far but it took nearly an hour to get there. Driving through people walking in front of the car, other cars trying to get through and the streets lines with market stall and shops selling everything imaginable. I was hoping our new hotel wouldn't be in this area because there was so many people but soon enough I saw the sign for hotel Amigo and it was right in the thick of it. We got inside the hotel, the guy at the front counter spoke ok English and was helpful, he also had a funny girly laugh that he did after he finished each sentence which I found amusing. Our new room was pretty bad, it felt more like a prison cell than a hotel room, the wifi didn't work and the room safe was locked and needed to be reset. We didn't want to stay in the room so we went for a walk towards the Zocalo square. There were still people everywhere and the closer we got to the square the more people we saw. There was also the sounds of live music and drums carrying through the air. Once we got to the square we noticed that something was surely going on, the entire square was filled with people and there was a stage set up with bands playing. We started noticing a lot of gay looking men and Bobbie said it may be a gay pride parade, the more we looked the more we saw multi colored flags, gay men and women and transvestites. Pretty soon we came across the road that runs past the Zocalo and it confirmed our suspicions, a parade of colorful people, crazy costumes, fake boobs on men, men dressed as women and all sorts of craziness came rolling past. We had landed in the middle of Mexico's gay day parade. The craziest costume I saw was one young man wearing nothin but a gift box over his penis. We were really hungry and wanted to get out of the madness so as soon as someone with a food menu came up to me trying to coax me in I went along and we were soon in a very nice restaurant that overlooked all the action. We watched on as the parade rolled past, there were lots of men out on the balcony of the restaurant waving and dancing as the parade rolled past. Everyone was having the best time. We had a nice meal and enjoyed watching the festivities. Soon after we walked back through the madness to our hotel and chilled for a while. The longer we stayed in this hotel the less we liked it. There was a terrace bar and restaurant on the roof top but when we went up there for a drink there was no one up there. It did have a nice view but no one to serve us a drink or buy food and the only place you could get wifi was in the reception area. It wasn't even the first night and we were regretting leaving our other hotel, we had only booked two nights for the weekend in case we didn't like it. Within a few hours of arriving in the new hotel I was downstairs booking us back into the hotel Diligencias. We only had to put up with it for 2 nights. It got late and we were hungry so we took a walk back to the square for food. There were less people around but it was dark and now it was party time. The restaurant we had dinned in earlier and the others around it had turned into night clubs. We looked up into the clubs where dance music and colored lights where spewing out into the night sky and you could see lots of men dancing in the windows. We got our food and and went back to the hotel, I felt like I could have stayed out and partied but maybe on another night. After a movie we fell asleep.
