Hamada is a small town near Hiroshima.  It is about two hours from Hiroshima via car but, somehow, is takes over three hours to get to Hamada via train.  Its a small coastal town and I came here to meet up with Chu, a Chinese guy I met in Tokyo back in February.  He is living here and studying at Hiroshima University.

Just spent a day in Hamada and got to explore a bit of the town.  Went for some fantastic sushi at a little restaurant that Chu says is well known within the region.  The salmon sushi almost melted in the mouth.  Very nice.

The plan was to check out some hot springs, which abound in the area.  Unfortunately neither of us had a car and the train network doesn't go to the one Chu had wanted to check out.  Buses where sketchy so we tried hitchhiking.  I say tried because we where unsuccessful in our attempt.  We definitely made a few peoples days though as I could see many people pointing and laughing in there cars as they drove by us on the road, with me holding a large sign Chu had written in Japanese.  I wish I knew what it said...cause I kind of think it said something funny.  Or maybe I'm just funny looking.

Will Ferguson, a Canadian author has a book that is now a few years old, about his attempt to hitch across the country from the south tip of Kyushu to the north tip of Hokkaido during the cherry blossom festival in the spring.  He had similar experiences but eventually was able to get rides.  We gave up after about twenty minutes in a couple different spots.  We did have a couple people at one point who looked interested but didn't have room to pull over (at least that is what we where telling ourselves) but Chu was pretty happy since he figured after doing that in such a small town he will be very well known going forward.  His dating chances have greatly improved - although I think his current girlfriend might have an issue with that.
