We got into town just after 5:30pm. Three hours later we got to the hostel. Two different "leaders" got us lost and the one person with a copy of Lonely Planet got confused with the words for "hostel" and "hotel" on his map and led us a km in the wrong direction before he was removed of his leadership duties by the group.
There are two airports in Bucharest - the main, modern one that most people use - and the one I was flying out of, Baneasa Airport. Two doors leading to the tarmac and a tiny waiting room past security, it reminded me of a larger version of the Powell River airport. From what I could tell only discount airlines use this airport.
Due to a slow bus I finally got to the airport just before 3pm and was a little worried since I still had passport control to go through and the flight was leaving at 4pm. No worries though because I soon realized that between my checking the internet that afternoon and arriving at the airport the flight had been changed to 5pm.
On every flight I have ever been on, if the airline is lucky, a few people pay attention to the safety demonstration. I was in my seat reading a magazine when I noticed something on the plane...silence. I looked around and probably 80% of the plane was very intently watching the standard safety announcement. To my right was an older Romanian lady, probably in her fifties, wearing a flat-brim Gucci-style NY Yankees cap...straight outta the hood yo. I got the impression she didnīt understand the image she was portraying with her cap. Despite her gangsta look she too was very intent on how the seat cusion could be used as a flotation device.
The flight was very ordinary on a brand new Boeing 737 jet, no turbulance and over in under two hours. When we landed the plane erupted in applause. Twice. I have only experianced that once before in my life on a flight to Winnipeg with terrible turbulance with a rather rough landing...none of which happened on this Blue Air flight from Bucharest to Rome.
