Today the Kingdom of Thailand goes to the polls, and as a consequence many shops and businesses have shut down for the day.

This election has almost become a referendum on Thaksin, the current hugely unpopular PM, and with passions running high if he stays in office after the results are announced the extremely peaceful demonstrations in Bangkok may take a turn for the worse.

In the far north of the country (where I am currently) the politics of the nation are still felt among the people, with most Thais keeping an eye on the news. There is less than half an hour left for people to cast their vote. I doubt that there will be any demonstrating in Pai whatever the result may be; people are just too laid back here.

Next stop, either Sopong or Mae Hong Son. The latter is holding a festival in a couple of days so it might be worth a look.
