A bigger mention in the lonely planet and recommendations by word of mouth have all had their effect on this travellers' oasis of the north. The profusion of new places to hang out has spread out the tourists among the small town, creating a much less cosy atmosphere. The success in tourism has also prompted greater investment, hailing the end of super cheap accommodation and an increase in menu prices.

Gone are the 40B dorm beds at Golden Hut, and you can no longer get a meal and shake for only 30B at Dang restaurant.

Many of the businesses seem to have changed ownership, and perhaps this is indicative of the increase in tourism here. Maybe the best time to sell a guest house or restaurant is when the potential buyers can easily see the rise in customer numbers.

Being the start of the hot season, some places are shutting up for a month. Unfortunately a good vegetarian restaurant (Gingers) is one of those places taking a break until May.

Pai still hasn't lost it's charm though. There are still the local attractions just outside the town, such as the hot springs, waterfalls and canyon. But being the start of the hot dry season the waterfall is reduced somewhat in size.

And there are new cheap places to eat in the town, where it's possible to get a meal for 20B and a fruit shake for 10B.

Local Prices:
Fan rooms 100B (with shared bathroom) or 150B (with en suite hot water)
ADSL internet 1B per minute
Pad Thai 20B
Thai banana pancake 10B
Fruit shake 10B
