Having spent two months touring around the South Island of New Zealand (not forgetting a few days on Stewart Island also) I'm back up north in Wellington.

It's been a fun weekend catching up with friends and walking around the busy city streets again. On a second visit to Wellington I'm noticing things I missed the first time around, especially some of the more eclectic public art. Some of the galleries have new exhibitions, so I get to visit them all over again too.

The weather has been great recently, and logically it should be getting hotter the further north I drive. Then again this is New Zealand and the weather is anything but predictable here.

Yesterday I booked my DOC entry permit ($9) to Kapiti Island, so in a few days time (which was the next available slot) I'll be getting the ferry across to this very popular nature reserve. The DOC only allow 50 people a day to visit the 10km long island, with no overnight stays. It might be my last opportunity to spot a kiwi in the wild, but as they are nocturnal my chances are pretty slim!
