This is not the first time I've celebrated my birthday in foreign city (Rotterdam, Auckland and Sydney previously) but it's the first time I've celebrated it with people I had not met before today.

After saying goodbye and thanking the Gerritsens in Palmerston North, my birthday started with a scenic drive along the Kapati Coast, stopping at a couple of places along the way: Foxton (a small town, with a big windmill - enough said) and Waitaere Beach (where the nearby forest was used for LOTR filming).

Part way along the main road to Wellington there was an alternative scenic route that took TROGDOR and I high up in the ranges for stunning views of Kapiti Island and the coastline.

On arrival in Wellington I was an immediate victim of the one way system and found myself driving in circles trying to find my way to a BBH hostel. Unfortunately they were fully booked and I could already foresee a problem with parking in the city so I used one of my life lines: there was no audience to ask so I phoned a friend...actually a friend of a friend...and I was txting rather than phoning.

It all worked out fine and by the evening I was parked up outside Gemma's house, had a shower, my own room and an apple crumble baking in the oven!
