Our last leg of the road trip ended today when we drove the relatively short distance from Litchfield National Park north to Darwin. The mood in the car was a little quiet as we knew arriving in Darwin would signify the end of a fantastic journey together. We listened to "Get Born" by Jet one last time, which we've adopted as our driving album (tracks 2,3,4,8 & 9 are great).

For the past month we have covered hundreds of kilometres together since leaving Perth. We've seen some of Australia's most beautiful and iconic landscapes, and I now understand why people who tour Western Australia rave about it so much. All along the way we met up with our friends from the Ozi Inn (Perth), and also made new friends at various places en route. People we've met (both Aussies and travellers) have been so open and friendly.

As we entered Darwin we headed straight for the Gecko Lodge, thanks to a couple of recommendations from friends. Dorm rates range from $18 to $20 at the moment and the thought of sleeping on a bed again was a welcome change after camping for most of August. [Having said that the beds turned out to be less than comfortable]

I have just over a week in this city before flying to Brisbane, which will be the last Australian state capital that I have not yet visited. I'm glad that before leaving Australia I will have spent time in each State and Territory, but it is impossible to see everything in one trip. You always have to leave something for the next visit...
