Having spent a week in St Kilda, a cool beach suburb of Melbourne heavily populated by backpackers, I felt it's about time to leave the city for a long weekend road trip.

Route: The Great Ocean Road
Destination: Apollo Bay
Transport: Paul's station wagon
Intrepid Travellers: Jo, Aileen, Siobhan and myself (and of course the fishes)

More on that later, as we are not setting off for another hour...

I've had a great week here in St Kilda. The weather has been sunny and warm every day, not at all what I was expecting in Melbourne. Everyone talks of how Melbourne is a city of four seasons in one day, but so far I'm enjoying the pleasant transition from summer to autumn. On Thursday I went for a bike ride along the beach side route, it was beautiful. Colin and I clocked up a fair few kms on the less-than-perfect hostel bicycles, mine had the most uncomfortable seat I've ever sat on. We went as far as we could in both directions along the beach; from Luna Park to the docklands, then all the way back and to the other side of the bay to Sandringham.

The actual hostel itself where I am staying (All Nations) is quite basic, and as they are undertaking renovations I would not recommend them at the moment. Especially as they are still charging full rent at $26 a night for a 6-bed dorm. Next week I think I'll check in somewhere else.
