As predicted, I didn't get much sleep on the 8 hour Greyhound journey. On arrival in Melbourne I was expecting cooler weather but was pleasantly surprised - it was actually nice and sunny, even warmer than Canberra during the last couple of days.

I made my way over to St Kilda (an area of Melbourne to the East and on the beach) to meet up with Triona and Jo, Kylie's Irish friends who came to visit us in Sydney during New Years. It was great to meet up with them again.

After dropping off my bags and getting a mini tour of St Kilda I headed back into Melbourne's city centre on the tram - day passes can be purchased for $5.90 from most newsagents or on the tram itself if you have the exact change (bills are not accepted by the ticket machine). The first stop for anyone coming to this city should be the rather impressive visitors centre in Federation Square. It's possibly the best tourist information centre I have ever visited, anywhere! Lots of staff and lots of free information.

In the same square is the NGV (Melbourne's main art gallery) but having not had much sleep I did not manage a full tour of all levels. There were enough good works there to justify a repeat visit so I will definitely be back another day.

After some dinner in St Kilda it was off to the local Esplanade Hotel (or Espy as the locals say) to hear some local live music. The walk there took us past some of the filming locations for the Australian drama series 'Secret Life of Us'. On the way back we walked past a trio of cake shops; Acland Street is famous for them. That's somewhere else that I will definitely be visiting again - and during opening hours!
