Anniversary weekend is when Auckland celebrates it's city status and everyone takes Monday off work. This translates to a nicely timed Bank Holiday just before the end of the school summer holidays.

Robert, Sebastian, Hendrik and I decided that we would take advantage of the particularly good weather and head off down to the Waitakere Ranges for some hiking, camping and Settlers of Catan (a very addictive German board game).

Whatipu is about an hour and a half drive from downtown Auckland, and hosts some historic sites. From the 1850s until the 1920s the area was a logging and timber production centre and a large mill was built in the Whatipu valley. From the 1920s the region has attracted holiday makers and has more visitors each year than Milford Sounds. The Whatipu Sands were classified as a Scientific Reserve in 2002.
