Having been back in New Zealand for a week Hendrik and I decided to try out the temporary open-air cinema set up in the Viaduct Harbour. Tonights screening was a documentary called The Travelling Birds, also known as Winged Migration.

It is the first time I have been to an outdoor cinema and I doubt that I could have picked a more appropriate film to watch. The documentary followed various species of birds (mainly varieties of geese) on their long migrations, some of them for thousands of miles. The camera work was stunning. As the film played there was an occasional couple of birds flying over the huge inflatable screen wondering what all the fuss was about.

At $12 for the standard seating it is the same price as going to a normal cinema in Auckland so well worth it just for the experience. Due to the open-air nature of the cinema the best seating was definitely in the middle towards the front few rows, otherwise some of the stereo sound would be lost. The film screenings will only be cancelled if there is a storm, so bring your waterproofs and warm clothes as it does get chilly after sundown.
