Arriving in Chicago while it was still dark was very pretty. The streetlights and Christmas decorations were twinkling as we came into land, quite stunning when you can see everybody's decorations at once. From Midway airport it was very easy to get to the downtown area of the city, often referred to as the Loop. The CTA (Chicago Transport Authority) Orange Line took me straight to the HI Chicago Youth Hostel for $1.50 in about 30 minutes. The hostel itself seems a little pretentious with signs up in the lifts asserting that it is the "Best hostel in Chicago". One of the signs at a phone booth has quite aptly been changed to say "Blandest" instead.
Walking around the city it is unequivocally apparent that warm clothes are needed, when the wind is blowing against you it can be quite biting on uncovered skin. Most people I saw today were wearing hats and gloves. Feeling quite tired from all my flights I just managed to visit the library today. A fantastic huge red building that is festooned with impressive green overhanging decoration around the edge of the roof. I can see why many films have been shot here; the architecture is so cinematic!
