Bamboo Saxophones
Entry 53 of 198 | show all | print this entry |
My tour of guesthouses and hostels in and around the old city did not inspire me enough to move. Most of the more popular places were a little run down and I think where I currently am is possibly the nicest. Perhaps sleeping on a very hard mattress might be good for my back, would any physiotherapists out there agree?
Heading east out of the old city main gate I visited an antique shop that sold bamboo saxophones. Although the one on display was saxophone shaped with a reed mouthpiece it had simple holes for keys, more like a recorder. The size was similar to an alto-sax, but it was pitched in the key of F. This was the larger of the two bamboo varieties on sale here, and retailed for 4900B.
Instead of trying to get to the other side of the city in time for Monk Chat I was lured by the famous night market that was just starting to pick up steam. Prices on the whole were similar to the massive weekend market in Bangkok, but with a bit of haggling I was able to get much better prices for wooded frogs, fisherman trousers and shirts. As with every market, it is still possible to get ripped off here so "buyer beware".
