Funky moped
Entry 45 of 198 | show all | print this entry |
I got my hair cut yesterday (really short) at the local barber on the main road. Although he didn't seem to understand any English he did a pretty good job of interpreting my hand gestures. What I didn't count on is that for the 100B I paid I was also getting a shave and head massage!
According to the island map I picked up at my chalet, I was staying very near the Siam Natural History Museum. So off I went to spend the afternoon there only to discover that there seemed to be a school on the same site (although the letters above the entrance still spelt out Siam Natural History Museum). On further investigation I found a small room on the right with a small sign explaining that the museum 'room' was only open periodically during school hours. Needless the say this was the quickest museum tour I have ever done. The children nearby seemed to be surprised that someone had actually come to visit the 'museum'.
After watching a little of Terminator 3 at the local cafe (hearing Arnie in Thai is only slightly amusing) and walking along the beach front I had seen pretty much all there was on Bo Phut so I rented a moped to see a bit more of Thailand's third largest island. At 150B for 24 hours rental this is the cheapest and most practical way to get around as there are no buses.
First stop was the Tesco Lotus hypermarket to stock up on supplies. It was quite strange seeing the familiar Tesco sign next to a Palm tree. Next stop was Big Buddha. Yes you've guessed it - a temple with a huge 12 metre golden sitting Buddha. Then onto the lively Chaweng beach where most of the tourists to this island seem to end up. This place was heaving with people and reminded me why I had opted for the relatively quiet Bo Phut.
By the time I had returned home I could understand why so many moped riders in KL tend to wear their jackets back to front. I was covered in a fine mist of dust. Mind you most of the riders here didn't bother. And I seemed to be one of the very few who wore a helmet.
Today I visited the other popular Lamai beach and it was much the same as Chaweng. There were some excellent views of the island bays along the way. Following the main road around the island I stopped by Temple Khunaram (where there is a mumified monk wearing sunglasses) and visited the Namuang waterfall.
