Another early start this morning (leaving Pusat Belia Hostel at 6:30am) to get the 7:30 ferry (B$16) to Pulau Labuan. Getting up this early was particularly tiresome after spending yesterday evening at Brunei's version of Alton Towers. Mat and I then stayed up until 2am chatting with Dave in our dorm so I was sleeping for most of the ferry journey. After a short wait on Labuan island it was onto the next ferry (RM31.50) out to Kota Kinabalu - the state capital for Sabah.
First impressions of KK are not as positive as other cities I have visited in Borneo. Perhaps it will grow on me but the relatively expensive accommodation is a little disappointing. The waterfront is not as touristy as Kuching and just arriving from BSB I guess anywhere is going to look a little run down in comparison. Still I'm looking forward to climbing Mount Kinabalu nearby, at 4101 metres it's the highest mountain in South East Asia. Followed by a stay at Poring Hot Springs to recuperate this should be a satifying end to my tour of northern Borneo.
