Day 40: We left Christchurch bright and early to head north to the Marlborough Region for some good wine tasting. On the way we stopped in Kaikoura for lunch and a short cliff walk to see some seals. The walk turned out to be straight through several cow and sheep pastures. Watch your step! At lest we got to see some seals as well as some of the most spectacular views in New Zealand (or at least that's what the sign said).

That night we stayed at a backpacker place in Renwick and decided to check out the local pubs. The first one, the Woodbourne Tavern, served $6 steaks ($4 US) and reminded Jason a lot of a small-town Iowa tavern. The other one (there are only two) was a British style pub called the Cork and Keg. This place had money and bar coasters from all over the world plastered on the ceiling and walls. We even saw a few from Oregon (Edgefield and Full Sail)! Although it was fairly early on a Sunday, everybody in there was pretty drunk from a day of wine tasting. Boy did they ever like Fleetwood Mac. Anyway, a few of the smarter ones had called a taxi to haul them home. The taxi driver was pretty agitated when he made his fourth trip into the bar to collect one of the ladies shoes that her friend had swiped to use to chug his last beer. Jason later found him sitting on the floor in the gents room with his legs stretched out in front of the door. Nice place.

Day 41: Janell thought it would be a great idea to rent bicycles for the day's wine tour. It would have been had it not been for the 30 mph headwind for the first leg of the loop. We made it through that ordeal to find a tailwind and six wineries in the four-hour trip. As anybody who has spent an afternoon wine-tasting can attest to, not much else happened that day.
