This morning we woke up in Nelson and started our drive toward a small town called Motueka. On the way we stopped at Berrylands, a place to pick your own berries. Neither of us have done this before and as soon as we started picking raspberries, we both wondered why because it is fun! Of course we had to taste a few first to make sure they were worth picking and paying for. They passed the taste test with their incredible sweetness. We didn't pick too many, but it was amazing how easily the raspberries come off the vines. Next up were the boysenberries. Not only have we never picked these before, but we have never even tried them before. Naturally, that was the first thing we did when we arrived at the boysenberries vines. They were a little more tart than the raspberries, but delicious still. We picked some of these and then moved on to strawberries. We were able to pick some of the reddest and juiciest strawberries we've ever seen. This was a fun and spontaneous activity.

After berrying up for the day, we headed to a small wharf town called Mapua. This is a cute little place with cafes, bars, and unique stores. It was interesting to walk through the neighbourhood and into some of the stores. We saw some beautiful art pieces and unique gift ideas. It didn't take much time at all to walk through all of Mapua. There is a ferry that goes from here to Rabbit Island where there are nice hiking trails and beaches, but we opted not to do that today.

Finally, we were on the road again, heading to Motueka. This is a larger town than Mapua, but not by much. We walked down the main street wondering how so many bakeries could survive on just one short street! I thought I should support one, so I bought a little quiche. We continued walking off the main street and into a really nice neighbourhood with beautiful homes facing the beach. We walked along the beach back to the beginning of town and back along the main street.

We picked up some groceries to make lunches for tomorrow, as we will be heading to Abel Tasman National Park for the day to enjoy beautiful beaches, great walking, and lovely sunshine!
