So, it was a sluggish start this morning. Not due to any residual alcohol issues but more to a lack of sleep. The hotel had no air con, so we left the windows open to cool down. Unforutnantly things kept going by, noisy rain storm and the rubbish collector truck etc kept waking me up. On top of the crappy pillow there wasn't a great night sleep had. Dan and I were late getting our bags down, so we just carried them ourselves, I got a spot on the bus before heading back to have some crappy breakfast. Cereal and bread with Jam again...and then on the bus. We were heading towards Strasborg, we stopped around 10.30am for Calvin to file the tax returns for those who spent over 300Swiss Francs (not us) and then onwards Strasbourg.
We got to Strassborg around lunch time and the suggestion was a look around or lunch. We walked to the main square, which had a lovely church and promptly plonked ourselves down at a recommmended creperie. We had run around at every other stop and stuffed as much as we could into seeing most of the cities so we were tired and just wanted to sit and that is what we did. We ordered a savory and sweet crepe, Dan had a beer and I had a sweet cider and we waited not too long for our savory crepe. Dan had a galette of ham, cheese and egg which was delicious. I had a cheese, onion, white cheese and ham galette which was also very tasty. Our sweet crepes took another 45mins..luckily we had 1.5hrs at this stop. Dan had a sugar one, I had a apricot one and it was very yummo. We had a quick look around and got some buscuits of the region from a biscuit shop..they were all shapes and sizes and looked good. We only sampled one before packing the rest!
Back on the bus and off we headed to Heidelberg, now I have been to Heidelberg castle before and was keen to see the great Vat when we got there at 4.30pm we were told that entry was free from we walked up the steepest pathway ever (no really, it was a killer) and got to the top just after 5pm. The lady at the gate was saying there was no free entry, grrr. So Dan and walked halfway back down the steepest pathway and turned right to go to the gardens. The gardens pathway was steep and we climbed around and up and ended at the other side of the castle. This is where we saw some of our group inside, and when we asked they had just walked in the gate that wasn't free! Grrr, again. Of courese there was an overzealous guardian at the back entry who wouldn't let us in, but with some innocent "oh, but we are with that group" we talked our way in :) We headed to the Vat and had a look, and took some pictures, it was still as impressive as I remembered. We got kicked out at 6pm when the actual place did shut and dinner was at 6.30pm, so we wandered back down the steepest pathway ever and looked at a few souvenier places and got a Mexx drink (orange cola) and then waked to the Red Ox for dinner.
Dinner was included, including a drink so we ordered our beer and wine, had a cream of herby soup thing that was okay and then pork with gravvy and noodles. The pork was excellent, the gravvy good and the noodles a bit dodge. The dessert was ice creamy and good, not spectacular and that was dinner! Since we weren't staying in Heidelberg we got back on the bus and headed Ludwigshaven for the night. The hotel was pretty good, the pillows VERY European and flattish, so we got another one each. Dan spent most of the night sorting through photos and moving them onto the external hardrive. I stumbled across Miss Universe pagent on tv and watched that..even with the dubbing over in German, I could hear the english first and that was great :) After that I watched another movie called Femme Fatal with Antonio was rather dodgy but amusing enough to try and figure out what was going on in German.
We got to bed by midnight, but just after we went to bed...there was alot of door slamming, squealing and general noise coming from next door and the hallway. That died down after the door was opened and I reminded them there was sleeping to be had. A vote had decided we were going by 7am to get to Amsterdam tomorrow early. Oh yay..just what we need, even less sleep than we usually get.
