We stopped at Black Mountain for another terrible coffee before making our way into Charlotte.
Our home for the night is a Glenwood RV park directly opposite Charlotte Motor Speedway. The speedway is impressive when approaching it along the highway. It has a seating capacity of 140,000 and is considered the home track for NASCAR with many race teams located in the Charlotte area. The 2,000 acre complex also features a quarter mile, four-lane drag strip and clay oval
After a quick bite we made our way to the track and were just in time for a “Feel the Thrill Tour” of the Speedway, Kart track, Drag Strip and Dirt Circuit. The tour actually took us on a trip onto the banked oval track where we could experience the 24 degree banking before doing a “Hot 80 mph Lap” in our transit van.
Jan enjoyed this drive and the experience,, however it gave Allan a taste for speed so after the tour we went back to the Richard Petty Driving Experience for 3 laps in a NASCAR Sprint car. This is the same team that Australian Marcus Ambrose drives for in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Allan rode shot gun reaching speeds over 160 mph (260 kmh) around the banking, it was quite a thrill.
