We arrived in Naples in the afternoon and luckly enough our hotel was very close to the main train station by the Piazza Garibaldi - the central square in the city, which helped thru our visit. After climbing the steps to the second floor of Hotel Ginevra, we walked to the main station to find out information about trains to Pompei for tomorrow and then we walked a little thru the city. Naples surprised me. I was expecting a very dirty and dangerous looking city but I was wrong. The city is a big city like any other, as dirty and busy as New York (with less people of course), but we felt just as safe. There are many street vendors selling all fancy brands possible and many sites to be visited. The trash we expected to see on the streets was gone. Whatever the problem the city had with the government and the mafia about taking the garbage out of the streets was solved by the time we arrived there.
So on our first day we mainly visit the Centro Historico (Historic Center) which is full of narrow alleys with old building and a lot of people. The streets were really narrow, but cars and bikes still fought for space!!! It was in one of these alleys that we found a very good restaurant indicated by our guide book, where we ate a huge pizza for only 4 euros!!! We thought that if all we eat from now on is about this price we would be in good shape thru Europe, however that was the only 4 euros pizza we ate! On the next dinner we stopped at another restaurant, where not only the pizza was more expensive, but we were also shocked by the 3 euros cover charge, which is a price we had to pay to have a table cloth, napkins and glasses on the table.
Out of the historic center, the places we visited in Naples included the Castel Nuovo (The New Castle), the Galleria Umberto - which is a huge open mall in a gorgeous old building covered with an amazing glass ceiling, the Piazza del Plebiscito and some other main squares and buildings we dont remember the names.
