Flag of Nicaragua  , Granada,
Friday, July 24, 2009

Granada is a colonial city located in the northern shores of the Lago de Nicaragua.

As in all colonial cities, there are several churches, a central park and a main avenue where most of the restaurants and hotels are located. It reminds me of Antigua Guatemala.

The city of Granada is very well distributed, at least in the downtown. All the banks are located in one point, markets and supermarkets located in another part of the city, so it is very easy lo find what one needs.

The main avenue runs from the central park straight  to the lake. However, the boulevard goes from the park to the Hotel Granada. From there to the lake is just a simple road of about 2 miles. Once in the lake there is a peer, museums and a lot of bars and discotheques. Even though it is not recommended to walk there at night, if you can get a taxi there would be no danger to go partying.

A lot of Granada's history recalls the pirates invasions, the colonial period of course and the central american struggle with William Walker in the 1800s. He actually lived in Granada for some years and declared himself the president of Nicaragua. He is not recognized as a former president since he was not democratically elected. His house is now turned into a souvenir store.

Today we just walked around the city, tried the typical food in the restaurants nearby. We obviously tried several local beers! Toņa is by far the best I've tried here.

Due to the long trip and the heat, we decided to rest the rest of the day.
