Cappadocia. Where do I start with the history of this place? I suggest you Google it. Additionally, the underground city of Derinkuyu is 1 of 37 known underground cities in Cappadocia. It has 18-20 stories, according to some archaeological estimates, 8 of which are open to the public. Once upon a time, this particular cavern is believed to have housed as many as 20,000 people and was used by Christians to escape the Romans during persecution. Picture this: you enter from the desert and hundred degree surface temperatures. By the 4th floor it is cold. Floor 8 is freezing.
