Wednesday, April 20th

After the mining tour we continued west towards Gallup, New Mexico and the El Rancho Hotel and Motel. The El Rancho was originally built by the brother of D.W. Griffith who was a famous Hollywood movie magnate, or so the brochure says, I've never heard of him.  But I have heard of some of the names of the famous people who have stayed there.  Basically think of any famous western and it was filmed somewhere in the local area.  This means that people like John Wayne, Ronald Regan, and Kirk Douglas have all stayed there.  There were tons of autographed photos of the famous people who have stayed there on the walls, Betty Grable, Humphrey Bogart, Lucelle Ball, Katherine Hepburn, and the list could go on forever.  The rooms were also numbered and named after people who had stayed there.  We walked by the Jane Fonda room but didn’t get a chance to go in any.  The whole place was really cool when you think about all the people who have been there.  We also stopped in and had a drink at the 49ers lounge off of the main building.  Shannon got served so no worries.  There were a lot of dollar bills hanging around the bar that people had signed so Jared decided we needed to hang one.  He was at a lost as to what to write on the dollar for a long time, and the bartender suggested he write something about how real men drink margaritas with sugar rims.  Needless to say she fit in well with our family.  In the end Jared wrote about the Bookhamer/Bonini Route 66 Road Trip and we all signed our names.  Jared had a little trouble stapling the bill above the bar to which the bartender made fun of him again.  I really enjoyed her.  We then piled back into the RV to head to Holbrook, AZ.
