Pete and Sues
After a leisurely start to the day with breakfast by the open doors overlooking Pete and Sue's lovely garden we headed off to Abbotsbury where there is a Swannery and large garden. The journey there was through typical Dorset countryside of beautiful rolling hills and small hedgerows of trees. We were lucky to arrive at the Swannery at a time when all the baby swans (cygnets) are between 1 and 6 weeks old. They are adorably cute and there were a lot of them
After spending quite a while with the swans we stopped for lunch in Abbotsbury at a lovely old stone building where we could sit outside in the garden. A very serene setting quite in keeping with the surrounding village of thatched roofed stone houses. After lunch we went back into the gardens next to the Swannery where they cultivate plants from all around the world. Pete, being a landscape gardener, knew the names of many of the plants but enjoyed my input on the plants from Australia and New Zealand that he was not so familiar with. I can totally understand why both Pete and Sue come to these gardens often as they have been set up as if they are a natural bush and you just wander on through the dappled shade of the trees, getting lost and stopping to admire a new plant, or bird, or even butterfly as you meander through. At one part of the garden there is an open area just recently developed with a stand of magnolias each side of a clearing and as to reach the top of the clearing the breathtaking view of the coast and an area called the Fleet spreads before you. Fabulous!
We didn’t leave the gardens until about 6pm so we decided to stroll for a few minutes on Chesil Beach, before heading for a well earned drink and meal at a lovely restaurant at West Bay. Being a sea port the menu was full of seafood but this time I was sensible and ordered fish as there is no way I want to feel ill afterwards. My food was delicious – Brill with spinach and a sorrel sauce, and I have no idea how they managed to make the spinach crispy but it was very delicious. A lovely berry and clotted cream desert was pure heaven to finish off with.
We then headed home, all a little tired but having had a wonderful day.
