We left Bagnoles this morning and drove through the verdant French countryside, using the back roads. Other than many farmers on tractors and the odd milk truck the roads were very quiet. Our route included a couple of stops and detours along the way. Firstly we stopped in Fougeres after meandering through the old town and negotiating the one way streets. The view of the old fortress from the Place du Jardin was pretty special. The region has many medieval fortresses and old towns still standing and it is always amazing to think how long they have been there
After Fougeres we headed to Dinan, another old town t the head of an inlet to the sea. We stopped for lunch and to take in the views, and then a quiet stroll through the alleys, and a nosey in the little tourist shops that seem to be everywhere in places like this. My only complaint would be that smoking is still allowed at restaurants, even if it is outside only – which is exactly where you want to sit on a sunny day. But heck, the place is so nice you can’t really complain that much.
The last leg of the day took us here to this lovely little beach resort town, Dinard, with a holiday atmosphere of fun and that seems to pervade places like this. Children digging castles, people sunbathing, a group of boys playing volleyball, people eating ice-creams – all in a gentle breeze and under the summer sun. In the evening couples and groups of friends stroll the streets near the beach looking for a restaurant that has a fare to their liking.
Tomorrow we head the Rennes for the day to return the car but will be back here in Dinard for our final night in France.
