We woke early this morning well rested. After enjoying a light breakfast we decided to walk around the streets of Whampoa. All the schoolchildren were making their way to school, and everyone else was heading in to work, so there was a hectic mass of people. As all the shops were closed we strolled for a while and enjoyed discovering a new area, but then we decided we would be better off on Hong Kong Island. We joined the melee of people on the Star ferry heading to work and crossed to the other side. Most of the shops there were closed too but we thoroughly enjoyed wandering around the streets reminiscing about past times we had been here. Considering that all the stores were horrendously expensive designer label stores it was probably a good thing that we could only look in the windows!
We made it back to the hotel so that Andre could go for a swim before lunch. I managed to catch a glimpse in the mirror and discovered that with the humidity, and my lack of straightening irons, it meant my hair had gone wild and I look like the wild woman from Borneo. Sigh.
David picked us up after lunch. We had planned to visit the Buddha in Lantao but luckily we enquired before leaving, as it seems the cable car is closed for maintenance. Instead we headed up to the alleys of Mong Kok where you can buy pretty much anything you want. The area has been cleaned up a lot in recent times but we were still vigilant of pick-pockets and rip-off merchants. We had great fun weaving through crowded streets, checking out the stalls and small shops. Entire streets closed off with only electronics, another with only shoes and sporting goods, and another with pets and so on. Andre was in heaven as we made our way into shop after shop of tropical fish - both marine and freshwater. Many of the fish were rare, and I know he would have loved to bring some back home with him. We also loved how the fish are already in plastic bags and on display in the door ways. It puts a whole new slant on pre-packaged goods.
Once back at the hotel we had a light meal and prepared ourselves for a very early flight out the next morning.
