Lisse and Joure
Trip Start Jun 08, 2005
23Trip End Jul 19, 2005
This is very much a business day for us and we are treated to a tour of delphinium growers, flower breeders and perennial plant producers by Luc and the "Green Team". We find that they could sell many tens of thousands of our plants when they can produce more, discuss this and think we have answer. Long day ends with vg dinner with Luc and his team. Good day. Drove north and stayed in lay-by.
Wednesday July 6th
We continued driving north over the huge dyke that isolates the sea from the lake and the polders of the interior. I climb a tower to view the dyke and am treated to pleasant fifteen minute chat with a proud Dutchman and his wife who told me some of the history of the dykes. They were on their way for a holiday on one of the northern islands
A couple of years ago Ann and Peter Falkener visited our nursery in Wanganui, staying a while in exchange for some good work. We got on well together and promised that, should we ever be in Holland, we would look them up. That is why we have driven north. We found them by the simple expedient of waiting until we were in their town and ringing them. They were a tad surprised but never-the-less came to meet us and guide us to their summer house just a few km away. Peter and Ann are lovely people and treated us to a warm welcome and a great evening and driving around the district, and a sumptuous dinner. They had returned from South Africa just a week earlier where they had spent six months as volunteers helping to care for young HIV positive children. Very draining I am sure, but also very rewarding.
