Entry 1 of 1 | show all | print this entry

Finally i feel like writing again.   yes, yes, must admit, for a while there i was missing the inspiration a little, as things didn't quite pan out the way I had hoped.  But how someone so aptly put it one day, 'it is the rocks that lie in our path, that show us the way'.  Mmmh, wise beyond my years I am sure!!
So what were the rocks in my way you ask? well, moving to europe to experience the hurt of unrequainted love and feeling of loss of any sense of direction.  But no one likes a winger, or someone who feels sorry for themselves, so I clung to the words my dear old dad drummed into my head some time ago...'if you cant change it, dont give it any energy...worry about the things you can change!'.  So that brought with it, it's on little dilemma.  I knew i wanted to do something different, but what...well that was way too specific to ask me!!
The feelers were out in every which direction, from applications to the Berlin Fire Department, returning to oz and QAS or even riding the panam hwy from Mexico to Argentina.  they all had their own appeal and i decided to take my time to decide, meanwhile enjoying some quality time with the grandparents and old friends in the land of Sauerkraut and Bratwurst.
2007 was definately a christmas to remember, for so many reasons.
it was the first christmas in 17 years, that i got to spend with the grandparents.  The first time I got to take in the Xmas Markets on the Western side of the city i was born in, and then there was the unforgettable taste of gluewein in the freezing temps.
New Years too was right up there, celebrating my friend Rita's 21st with a fun run through the woods, and blowing up fireworks until we almost couldnt feel our hands in the cold, only that my legs were paining even more after the run, so the cold hands were negligible.  It was awesome!!
Just over the hangover, I was on the move again, to southern germany.  Karlsruhe, just on the border to France.  For a while now, i had been in contact with a Paramedic school there, and was now scouting out the possibility of perhaps working for them.  I have to admit my scepticism was hard to silence, even over the coming days, but i made the most of them anyways.
Turns out, the school have a number of international projects, where they either teach paramedics, or actually send staff on request, to staff field locations for things like UN projects etc.  A position in the Arab Emirates was just becoming available and i was interviewing for the same.  Still it all sounded quite unbelievable, things like more training for me, chance of working on helicopters in alps and more; had to be thought through.  Four days on the Garda Lake in Italy with the Head of the School, gave me the chance to do just that.  It was awesome down there.  No tourists this time of year, and some great climbing.  there are a lot of pre roped climbs all around the area, maintained by the italian alpine club, and you simply have to harness on, and off you go.  There was some mad scenery and of course the beautiful roman architecture everyone loves. The drive back to germany was long, but super scenic, through Tirol, past countless ski slopes that just made you want to buckle up.
during the days there, I made good friends with Danial, a young mexican who was also part of the group, here to see if he can not join the school on a scholarship. talking to him and confirming some of the seemingly unbelievable stories, made me decide to take up the offer of flying to the emirates to check things out and see if i might be interested in the job.
So after a few days back in Berlin, a pokernight with the boys from school, that almost saw me loose my pants, i was on my way to Abu Dhabi.
Whilst flying down there, i was pretty much resigned to the fact, that it was just a case of going through the motions, using the chance to see another place and perhaps gain a little more experience, but nothing more.  I was in fact already writing a job application for something back home.  But 'in shalah' (so god will), things often come quite unexpected.
As did the absolutely awesome time i had in the emirates during the week.
We all stayed in the accomodation provided by the Abu Dhabi police Department, to the instructors of the school, who were in charge of training the Police to paramedics.  For 5 days, i worked with Fabian, a german paramedic, and a couple of students and got a feel for the place.  The jobs we went to, were largely massive trauma, and a couple of severe Hypoglycemias...i think everyone there is diabetic...
As Fabian put it quite humoursly, 'there are only fast pedestrians and dead ones'. Speed limits, serve more as speed minimums, as all seem to blantantly ignore them. no wonder tho, with cameras not flashing until at least 40km/h above the limit, if at all.  Seat belts are a nice accessory, but no one says they have to be worn, and stopping at red lights is reserved for those that want.  Safety rules at worksites are there to be ignored and generally there is an attitude of, 'what will happen, will happen', or 'in shalah'.  At the same time, the country is completely fascinating, building things that you would think cant be built, like ski hall in a mall, an icecafe consisting of ice furnishings in a 50deg summer, an entire subway system to be finished within 5 years and, and and...The beaches are largely empty, as locals dont care much for beach culture, instead the mosks are filled throughout the day and you notice other pecularities, like guys walking down the street holding hands, as a sign of friendship.
The entire week down there went so fast, i wished i could have stayed.  But not to despair, 'in shalah' i will be back there Mid march.  we will see.
In the meantime it is time for one last trip on the high seas.  Arrh matey.ahoi for now.
