Well, we took off from Calgary at 7.30 am after another lovely Canadian breakfast of waffles and maple syrup, and traveled through the Rocky Mountains to Ev's place at 100 Mile House in BC. It took us 9 hours driving, with a few stops along the way, but was relatively easy driving.

The Rocky Mountains are just fabulous. We went through Banff National park for part of the way and the scenery is stunning. At least 2 lanes of traffic for much of the first half of the trip, and the interesting thing is that the BC government is putting a 4 lane highway through from Kamloops to the Alberta border, to be finished by winter of 2012. A massive undertaking. one section alone that we saw we reckon would take the entire NZ road transport budget. There is some massive blasting and stabilisation work to be done to achieve this, but what an asset it will be.

Along the way we saw some wildlife passes. They have 22 installed in the Banff National Park alone, and are installing more. Where installed they have reduced road kill of wildlife by 80%, which is huge. They are like double tunnels and they are grassed and planted, so that they look just like the surrounding countryside, and of course they are fencing all along the highways to encourage the animals to go into those areas. They do traffic counts of the animals crossing, and the numbers are huge! Stunning stuff.

We saw a few deer on the road, but that really was the extend of the wildlife, despite being warned to look out for beers, mountain goats and moose.

We arrived at Ev's place about quarter to 6 tonight. It was a thrill to finally be here and meet Tracey, Hayley and Aidan. They are all great, and we feel just part of the family. Not to mention, of course, there are two dogs, 1 cat, 2 horses, several goats, pigs, lots of chickens (in various stages of growth - eggs hatching, hatchling's, week old chicks, through to the layers), and whatever else he has growing in the woods around him.

We are staying in a lovely log house, on several acres of land, further out of 100 mile than I had anticipated. But they tell me the town will take me 3 minutes to do, so long as I take t slow.

Tomorrow we are looking to take it easy, sleep in (if possible - shouldn't be difficult for me, but probably hard for Malcy), and then going to play a little golf. Tracey and Ev have a number of side visits organised for us, and we are hoping to see Aidan play soccer on Friday, and Hayley doing her horse riding (not sure what yet) in the weekend.

So just thought I would let you know that we all safely arrived. Pics will have to wait til later.
