Heavy rain overnight so decided to stay in lucca for another night n go to pisa today. Walked off to train station and found a moat around the outside of the wall, wow did not realise it rained that much. So long way around to station, train delayed for over an hour, why, think it was the flooding. We saw a river extremely high with rapids, people's yards and fields with at least 30cm of water, all canals full. Got to pisa central which is about 1 mile from the leaning tower. What a wonderful city, it surpassed everything we heard about, it was strange at station but once into the town which had been damaged in world war 2, Old buildings, squares everywhere, history, clean and a photo around every corner. We loved it so glad we saw the town. It is a city with a big university so large student population, the tower was also nothing like we thought....we were at the start not even going to go to pisa. What a fantastic day, climbed the baptistery, the security staff even sang every half hr so you heard the acoustics. A walk up the tower of pisa at sunset, eerie feeling walking up that building. We caught a bus back to lucca, had no idea where to go or times just saw this in the travel book n thought not a 3 hr journey on the train system like this morning lets see if this will work. Train home in the dark hoping we were going in right direction. Water still over the road n parts.
We have enjoyed staying at lucca, walk around at night, no one having dinner till after 9 , bike is main transport or walk, not a big tourist area either. So off to siena tomorrow if trains working ok.
