It seems to be a cute town. It has the impression of being quite small even though apparently there are 170.000 inhabitants. I walked from the bus station to the hostel as it was only 15 minutes away. I love it when you can walk to the hostel as it gives you a chance to get a good first sense of the town on the walk over there. I walked straight to the beach and than in a parallel line to my hostel so I was able to sniff up some sea air.
When I got to the hostel I met Sandra from Holland who had just arrived by plain. Got talking and we decided to spend the rest of the day in a useful way and rent some mountain bikes and ride to the sea lion colony nearby. Two other people were doing this too so I met Luc from France and Adrienne from Argentina. We took off around two in the afternoon I think and started plowing through the gravel road which led to the colony. There seem to be a lot of gravel roads in Argentina. I assume it's a poverty issue. Biking on a gravel road is not the easiest of things but we got there in the end and were rewarded with the view of the sea lion colony. I just love watching nature at work. Not really anything spectacular though, sea lions generally lie on the beach near the water. If the water comes near and touches them they get annoyed and move further away - in a straight line over the other sea lions in most cases. We did see a dady sea lion arrive from out at sea though and it was amazing to hear him cry out and see the little sea lion react to it and sprint to it's father.
When we got back to the hostel we wanted to go out to get some food but drinking got in the way. I met several of the other people there and we finally ordered pizzas so we could continue drinking and prepare to go out. Around midnight we decided to go to a local pub called the Margerita and afterwards we moved to a local club. They were playing electro and I had the greatest of nights in a long time.
Too much alchohol though. I think I consumed at least 7 screwdrivers and that's after the initial beers. I ended up walking to the hostel in a non-linear line and got to bed around 6 in the morning. I vaguely remembered that I had to get out of bed at 7 for the penguin colony excursion I booked with Sandra the previous day.
End of a great day and night in Puerto Madryn.
