We just returned from a trip to the interior of Liberia today.  The countryside is beautiful; lush and tropical and so untouched by development. We visited the community of Harrisburg.  The interior of Liberia consists of many very small villages, like Harrisburg, of people living together with little to no resources.  They have no running water, electricity, medical services, or supply stores, like most of the country.  They grow food on the land and cook with coal on the ground.  People live in war damaged, unstable homes that would be condemned in the U.S.
Johnny Bar, the director of the community, walks for miles to get to the main road for supplies. They rarely eat rice because it is too expensive and difficult for them to get.  Today we (Hope International) brought them 3 bags of rice, along with all of the same items we gave the first orphanage.  I've never seen people so happy about rice.  Bishop Cox threw out the balls to the kids and asked some kids to jump rope for a prize.  None of the kids knew how to do it but they tried for the first time.  It was fun to watch!  Some of the over 12 years old have never seen a jump rope or play dough.  I showed them how to make a car out of play dough and they were amazed.  I told them that people in the U.S. care about them and want to help make their life better.  The people we have interacted with are working hard to change Liberia and are so grateful for help.  They are focused on all of the right things for the future- the children's education, healthcare and bringing them up with a sense of what is right.

You're doing great work!
So somehow I was missing all of the updates! I am all caught up now and weepy. Thanks for including the pictures. Your descriptions are so vivid, but it's special to see the pictures of you and the children, too. I know you must be so tired. Thanks for taking the time to keep us so informed. We love you and we are so proud of you! - Ross, Melane, James and Wyatt
