Gorda to san Simeon 30miles
Jan 28, 2014
. Talked for a while but still no sign of his wife so off we went, might see him tomorrow as their staying at a campsite in San Simeon too. The decent after that hill was amazing, must have gone on for about a mile then the next steep one came straight after - more walking. Still a morning walk with beautiful scenery all around you really can't complain, especially when you pass a hitchhiker still walking that you've already seen along the way the last 2 days. Then another wonderful descent and now it looks as if the steep hills are being replaced by roller coaster types, much easier going.
We come to a beach where there are loads of elephant seals just heaped up everywhere, they seem to like covering themselves with sand with their flippers. There are lots of babies there too. Funny they don't seem to smell bad like the ones in San Fransisco or La Jolla , I guess because the tide comes right in here & washes the beach. Further on & there are lots of beaches with them, maybe it's the time of year. Then we come to the sign for San Simeon and turn off the highway, there's a nice looking restaurant with a nice outside area so we have a beer and sandwich - should have remembered that in America you only need to share a sandwich, they were huge. Peter had steak & I had pastrami both hot & with masses of salad & chips all in half a French stick - I couldn't eat it all & it nearly beat Peter. Cycled on & realised we weren't actually in San Simeon as it was another 3 miles further, shame as we'd turned off the cyclemeter. Passed the entrance to Hearst Castle but won't be cycling back to visit, it'll feel too good to get off the bike. Found the Sea Breeze Inn & it really is breezy now as it's right on the beach, room has 2 beds, might as well use them both while relaxing watching gold mining in the Klondike. Went next door to the Mexican restaurant and had a couple of margaritas and beers, might be sorry tomorrow morning!
Woke quite early, it's a beautiful view from the balcony with the sun on the ocean - still no whales! Rang Neal and it's raining in San Diego which upset the owner when I told him as he said it must have bypassed them & gone straight South, there's already been forest fires which are unheard of in January. Breakfast was good (apparently we should say over medium to get no 'snotty'eggs). Bit chilly when we left but the road was absolutely empty, definitely the best time of year to do this as long as the weather holds, I'm sure it's really busy in summer. Gentle incline out of Gorda but then it really hit - we must have walked for about 2 miles, it was really steep. When we stopped for a breather at the top cycling along behind us came Dave from yesterday with his trailer. While waiting for his wife he was saying how he would like to get up early as it's so nice & quiet on the road then but it's hard to get out of the sleeping bag when it's so cold- we hadn't thought of that in our nice cosy hotel room
