I left home around 2:30 am to head to Heathrow airport to begin the Peruvian adventure.  We arrived at the airport at 5:30, just enough time to grab a cup of Coffee with Karl, who had been kind enough to take us down.

We then met the rest of the group we would be travelling with (all 26 of them). At this time of the morning it was very difficult to remember everyone's names but it looked like a great group.

After the meet and greet it was a quick dash through security and then off to get some last minute pieces from the duty free shops and then on for a quick pint prior to the flight (it may have been 7:30 am but some things are essential).

The first of the flights was Heathrow to Houston, we arrived there at around 1pm, I had forgotten my sunglasses so it was time to hunt a pair out...  Now this was a bit of an adventure, I found a small stall selling nice looking pairs and to be honest I didn't care about getting the best look I just wanting anything that would stop the high altitude sun burning my eyes.  I was greeted by this lady who appeared to be nice a friendly until she announced that Barack Obama would be arriving in Houston in a couple of hours and what did I think of that.  I had to be honest and say I didn't have an opinion at that time, I had been travelling for 18 hours at this time and my political views were next to zero.  "Well" she said, "he is the anti christ", I didn't know what to say and all I could think was I wanted her to be quiet and sell me a pair of glasses.  I got my money out and said I will take this pair, she responded with "the worst thing is, he is muslim, a secret one at that, we all know he is, he is the worst thing that ever happened to this country, the rest of you are fooled but we are not, he is not welcome here", I was in shock, I didn't know this lady and I certainly didn't want this conversation...  I quickly paid her and walked away, I looked at Dee and said can you believe that? Dee was equally shocked by the womens outburst.

After this brief encounter we decided that it would be best to stay away from shopping and wait for the next leg of the our journey.

After approx 3 hours we were off again, this time Houston to Lima, Dee and I were separated on the plane, I was seated next to Bridget, a member of our trekking team, a lady with a huge smile.  I was clearly shattered and fell asleep prior to take off for a few minutes before waking with a huge jump, I had been having a nightmare, not sure what it was about but it was enough to be noticed, Bridget looked at me and laughed, I felt like a fool as I didn't know this women and I was jumping around like a mad man.

Just as we flew out of Houston we viewed the most amazing sunset, the sky looked like it was on fire, it was beautiful, I took a picture as words could not cover how amazing it was.

After 7 hours we arrived at Lima airport, this was a bit of blur, I had now been travelling for 27 hours and all I wanted was my bed.  We went straight to the hotel, we were showed our rooms and I could feel the excitement build up "finally a bed" I thought, but NO, we were then quickly led to a dining room where we were briefed on the following days activities, we were to be up at 6am and off to catch a flight very early from Lima to Cusco, oh joy I thought, after the briefing it was nearly 3am before we finally got to our room, some 30 hours after I left my home.

So I was here in Peru and the adventure had begun.
