This is just my test entry to figure out how this travel blog thing works! Chris and I took a trip to New York City in August 2008. I lived there a decade ago, but it was Chris' first time in NYC. We stayed at The Harbor House on Staten Island, which is a small bed and breakfast right on the water with a distant view of the Manhattan skyline. It was really nothing to write home about, but it was clean, within walking distance of the Staten Island Railway, and saved us a bundle over staying in Manhattan!
The most daunting part of the entire trip was probably making the trek to and from Manhattan every day (easily an hour depending on how long we had to wait for the train), especially the 25 minute ride on the Staten Island Ferry. However, it did have a really great view.
One of the highlights of our trip was just hanging out downtown and seeing all the sights
Washington Square Park was always one of my favorite places in the city, so we visited there on the first day. There were (as always) some interesting characters there, including a guy dressed up with a cape and sword who was making a big production out of how he was refusing to perform that day out of protest for something or other.
And, of course, we did the Times Square thing, including a meal at the most expensive Applebee's on the planet (or the most expensive one I've eaten at, at least!). We also had dinner one night at Mars 2112, which is a restaurant decorated in a Martian theme. I first visited this restaurant in 1999 and had been wanting to go back ever since ... it's really a lot of fun in a cheesy sort of way.
And, to cut this thing short since this trip was months and months ago, perhaps the most awesome place in New York City is the penguin exhibit at the Central Park Zoo. Not just because it has cute lil' black and white birds running around, but also because Chris proposed to me there. :-) We had been watching the penguins for a really long time and I couldn't figure out why Chris didn't want to leave. Turns out he was waiting for the place to clear out some so that we could have some privacy, which never did happen since it was feeding time!
And, with that, I will end here. The next entry will actually start our actual 2009 travels (or at least those from March onward) ... our trip to Detroit!
