So after 7 days of doing and achieving nothing in Taganga (Caroline did do 20 hours of Spanish lessons so she is an exception) we have decided to live in Colombia. It seems to have everything gong for it. Food, drink and clothes are cheap, property is on the up and the sun shines most of the year not to mention you could slip Caribbean into the address. So we decided to go property searching. Tayrona is the local National Park with the most lovely beaches and amazing views, though we have been told that it has become a little overrun with tourists. So we set our sights on Palomino a little further north. Travel access is very easy, just a 1.5 hour drive from Santa Marta (7000 Pesos). The buses are extremely entertaining and play Latino Reggae all the way
After a couple of hundred metres the property started to come into view. Large palm trees bordered in white paint, lovely beach and then the property itself. The house was set on stilts and facing the ocean - see the picture attached. To top this off we were all alone apart from the caretaker - an immensely nice and helpful man called Lucas! The property does have a few flaws but I think we can overlook them, listed below, but it does come with a dog ( looks remarkably like the dog from the Simpsons)!!!!
1: there is no electricity
2: the is no running water
3: the is no bathroom
Our first night was spent testing the cooking facilities, our camping stove, which worked to perfection, a very good instant noodle dish if I say so myself (again see photo attached) and the bar which was excellent
The property, as we have mentioned before, is not that close to local ammenites and could pose as a problem. But luckily that too was solved. We rose the next morning to see our own personal fisherman hard at work. Luckily labour is not too expensive, as you can see it took quite a few fisherman to catch out dinner!
Activities during the day can be short on supply but swimming, reading and sweeping sand from the deck are all seriously time consuming....
Due to the prospect of buying we decided to stay another night and re check everything. Amazingly it all worked.... especially the bar. Did you know you can order a taxi to bring your booze to you on the beach..... A very useful service and actually cheaper than going yourself!!!!
Sadly on our third day we realised we were actually only her on holiday - sorry I meant traveling, there is a HUGE difference! We left very sadly to go back to Taganga to hopefully do nothing....
