Well back in Puerto Montt for a night and yes this place is very weird. While looking for a Hostel recommended in the Lonely planet we were dragged into GloriaŽs house and she was very keen that we would stay with her. Gloria is an old lady from Vina del Mar who moved to Puerto Montt to set up a hostel. Why anyone would move from the lovely Vina del Mar with its beaches and Playboy parties to the cold harbour town of Puerto Montt IŽll never know. She showed us our room, which incidentally didnŽt have a lock, and told us it would be 10,000 pesos for the 2 of us with breakfast included. She looked trustworthy so we thought what the hell and moved in. Gloria was on a mission to make us feel welcome. She offered us coffee and then surprised us with bread, ham, pate and cheese and then more bread and more bread. We tucked in as never ones to say no to a free meal. We signed the register and Gloria got very excited that I was her first Scottish guest. And its true I was, she got out her register and took Caroline through every guest that had stayed with her..... I inquired if she had a basin that I could do some washing in. She was insistent that she would do it for us. SO we off loaded 5 days of washing onto her and left her to it. She even refused to use my washing powder as it wasnŽt good enough!
After a bit of shopping (replacing our tent etc and trying to be proper campers instead of the laughing stock of campsites!) we returned to our hostel. We went into the room and found our stuff was indeed there. Well almost all of it. Gloria, bless her cotton socks, had been in to double check we didnŽt have anymore washing and added that to our pile! (She never asked for any money for this service). We sat down and relaxed in the living room and Gloria brought us our drinks (weŽd left them in the room too) that sheŽd put in the fridge while we were out. After Caroline putting on such a good impression of being interested by the register she thought she would then show us pictures of all her previous guests. Luckily these were not pictures of them sleeping or anything creepy like that. When the threat of being offered dinner was looming we quickly pulled out our vile instant pasta pots and went about cooking.
In the morning Gloria was true to her word, breakfast was on the go and again we were offered more bread that one could possibly consume. We told her we were off to the Navimag and she dropped everything. Leaving the other guests to fend for themselves She grasped the keys and scooted out the door with us. We thought she was just coming to say good-bye but no. She was going to walk us all the way to the check in counter.
A lovely lady, a great hostel experience and def worth visiting!
