We stayed at some of my parents friends on a dairy farm in Stratford. To get there we drove along the Lost World highway, a meandering drive through the hilly bush country, completely out of the way of any kind of civilisation. The only village we drove through for 4 hours was Whangamomona, a quirky village stick in the 1950s, with a great pub.
The Moger's lived at the base of Mount Taranaki , a dormant volcano last erupted 350yrs ago so it's due an eruption soon - luckily when we were't there. It's top 1400m is still covered in lava from the last eruption.
Mum and Dad had a day on the farm with the Mogers, meanwhile Jamie and I borrowed the car and headed off along Surf Highway and made our way up to New Plymouth - a great little city. The whole area is stunning, volcanoes and the coast within 10 miles of each other.
Next day we drove all down the west coast, stopping off n a few beaches, where there is black boiling hot volcanic sand, down to Wellington.
